MOSFETs (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors) are the most widely used switching device in power electronics, using gate voltage to control drain-source conduction. They serve power switching, motor drive, battery protection and power conversion circuits, spanning low/medium-voltage parts for consumer and battery applications to high-voltage parts for AC-DC and inverter stages.
- Derate Vds against the actual bus voltage with margin for switching spikes
- Rdson trades off against Qg (gate charge): lower Rdson cuts conduction loss but usually raises Qg, affecting switching loss and drive power
- Package sets thermal resistance and parasitic inductance — check package Rth and pin layout for high-frequency/high-current designs
- Automotive (AEC-Q101) grading differs from industrial/consumer grading in screening and failure-rate requirements — pick the grade matching the application
