IGBTs (insulated-gate bipolar transistors) combine MOSFET-like gate control with the low conduction drop of bipolar devices, suited to medium/high-voltage, high-current switching such as variable-frequency drives, motor control, PV inverters and industrial welding supplies.
- Derate collector-emitter voltage (Vces) and collector current (Ic) against the application's operating conditions
- Conduction drop (Vce(sat)) trades off against turn-off tail time, splitting conduction loss vs. switching loss
- Discrete vs. module choice depends on power level and thermal-layout needs
- Automotive grades add reliability metrics such as power-cycling life
