AC/DC flyback controllers drive the switching timing of an external power switch in flyback-topology power supplies. Compared with integrated solutions, the power device can be selected independently, giving greater design flexibility.

  • Requires pairing with an external power switch sized for the target power level, with controller and switch parameters matched
  • Modulation mode (PWM/quasi-resonant/PFM) affects efficiency and noise behavior
  • Quiescent and start-up current affect no-load power and start-up circuit design
  • Protection trip thresholds (overvoltage/short-circuit/overtemp) must meet applicable safety standards
