What Problem This Class of Device Solves

The AM MiniLED backlight controller (BCon) is the backlight system's coordination hub, sending zone-dimming data over the SPB interface and handling timing control. Used mainly in premium TV and monitor backlight designs.

How to Read the Key Parameters

SPB protocol generation and lane count: 10–36 lanes in SPB-2M (no SCK), 6–36 lanes in SPB-16M (with SCK) — sets the zone-count ceiling.

Zone count @120Hz: 500–12,000 zones in SPB-2M, 500–18,000 zones in SPB-16M — check each generation separately.

Host interface (SPI/UART/IIC): 1–3 SPI lines, UART/IIC each fixed at 1 line — match to the TCON/SoC line count.

VFB feedback ports: three tiers — 0, 12-bit×1, 12-bit×2 — choose based on voltage-feedback needs.

Package and pin count: LFQP-48L to LQFP-176L — check against board layout space.

Three Steps to Select

  1. Confirm the relevant SPB generation's zone count covers the target zone count and refresh rate.
  2. Check the lane-count ceiling against the number of downstream driver ICs, so later expansion isn't blocked.
  3. Confirm host-interface line count and package pin count fit the board design.

Common Pitfalls

  • Comparing only the lane-count ceiling while ignoring the actual zone count — the same lane count maps to different zone counts across the two generations.
  • Overlooking protocol-generation pairing with the driver IC — BCon and driver must match SPB generation, or the system won't communicate.
  • Checking pin count alone without footprint — the same pin count can occupy noticeably different board area across packages.
